EU Noodle Labels: When Ingredient Images Need a QUID Review

A new ingredient name or prominent image can create a percentage-declaration question even when the recipe is unchanged. Review the artwork and calculation basis together.

An unchanged noodle recipe does not mean that a redesigned EU label needs no ingredient-percentage review. Changing the name or giving an ingredient new prominence can raise a QUID question even when production stays the same.
QUID means quantitative ingredient declaration. It concerns how much of a relevant ingredient or ingredient category is used, rather than simply whether that ingredient appears in the list.
Source review: October 1, 2026. Next review: October 31, 2026, or sooner if the relevant guidance changes. This is an EU prepacked-food artwork checklist, not approval of a particular noodle label.

Review the emphasis as well as the recipe

The European Commission explains that QUID can be required when an ingredient appears in or is associated with the food's name, is emphasised through wording or imagery, or is essential to characterise and distinguish the food. Exceptions must also be considered.
Its guidance distinguishes a selective ingredient image from a genuine serving suggestion whose nature is clear and which does not otherwise emphasise the food or its ingredients. Printing “serving suggestion” beside an image does not by itself settle every presentation. See paragraphs 5 and 10–12 of the Commission QUID notice.
For a proposed noodle pack, give the reviewer the whole layout. A cropped ingredient list will not reveal a large front-panel image or a newly highlighted phrase.

Use an artwork-change comparison

Imagine an unbranded noodle design receiving a new prominent egg illustration. This is a hypothetical design exercise, not a statement about an actual Noodle House recipe or egg percentage.
Place the previous and proposed designs beside the current product specification. Identify the exact image and wording being added. Ask the reviewer whether the presentation triggers QUID, whether an exception is relevant and what evidence is needed for the decision.
Do not enter an attractive percentage just to complete the design. Equally, do not assume that retaining the old ingredient list answers the new question.
A short working record can keep the decision focused:
Review item
Input to supply
What changed?
Marked-up artwork showing the new name, phrase or image
What does it refer to?
Exact ingredient or ingredient category in the current recipe
Does QUID apply?
Review conclusion and any applicable exception
What supports the quantity?
Dated formulation and calculation reference
What goes to the designer?
Confirmed declaration and its approved location
These are suggested handoff fields, not an official form.

Confirm the calculation basis before copying a percentage

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland's QUID guidance explains the general recipe-at-addition basis and the special treatment relevant to moisture loss and reconstituted ingredients or foods. It also describes placing the declaration in or beside the food name, or in the ingredients list.
For dried noodles, ask the product-data owner and reviewer which basis applies to the actual process. Request the supporting calculation, not only a percentage without context. The weight of a dehydrated ingredient and its reconstituted equivalent should not be interchanged without establishing the applicable basis.
No illustrative percentage is supplied here because the necessary recipe and process data are product-specific.

Keep the decision with the artwork version

Once resolved, retain the reviewer’s conclusion with the exact recipe and artwork revisions. If the designer later enlarges an ingredient image or changes the name again, flag that change for review instead of assuming the previous decision covers it.
Use the private-label input handover guide to organise confirmed data for the designer. QUID is one specific question within that handover.
For an OEM noodle project, send the selected SKU, EU destination and proposed artwork through our contact page. Identify the ingredient-percentage question so the availability of supporting product information can be confirmed before final label review.
