Noodle Packaging Film: Compare Like-for-Like COF Results

A film friction number needs its contact surfaces and test conditions. Use a matched comparison before treating a lower value as a better packaging choice.

If a packaging converter proposes a noodle film with “lower COF,” ask what was tested against what before treating the number as an improvement. COF means coefficient of friction. A result for one surface pairing does not automatically answer a question about another pairing or prove that the proposed film will run successfully in the intended process.
This guide applies when a film report forms part of a packaging-change discussion. It does not imply that every noodle buyer needs to commission this test or that Noodle House supplies film-testing services.

Read the property and the contact pair together

ASTM D1894-24 covers starting and sliding friction of plastic film or sheeting against itself or another substance under specified conditions. Its published guidance also notes the significance of film age and surface condition; starting-friction measurement can be sensitive to loading and waiting conditions. ASTM D1894 scope and guidance.
For purchasing, “COF 0.30” is therefore an incomplete comparison entry. Identify whether it is a starting or sliding result, which film face was involved and what contacted that face. Keep the method and reported conditions attached to the value.
The number has a meaning inside that test description. Removing the description makes it easier to compare two figures that answer different questions.

Use a mismatch example before ranking suppliers

Imagine a current film report gives a hypothetical sliding COF of 0.30 for outer surface against outer surface. A proposed material sheet gives 0.20 but does not identify its contacting surfaces. These are invented figures, not specifications or recommended targets.
It would be premature to call the proposed material one-third better. The second number might concern a different face pairing, a different counterface or a different reported property. The first action is to request the missing test description, not to award the material a higher score.
Even if the converter confirms that both values are sliding results, the comparison remains unresolved until the relevant conditions and pairing are aligned. Mark the candidate “data not yet comparable.” That status describes the evidence without declaring the film defective.

Write the application question in ordinary language

Ask the person responsible for the packaging process what problem the proposed change is intended to solve. Is the concern tied to handling one film surface against another, contact with a particular machine surface, or another identified interaction? Let that person define the relevant test and operating comparison.
Avoid a purchase instruction that merely says “make the film more slippery.” It supplies no clear acceptance decision and may not describe the interaction that matters. A useful brief names the current material, the proposed change, the observed issue and the intended process evidence.
If the reason for changing film is commercial rather than operational, say so. A lower-cost candidate still needs an agreed technical review; the presence of a lower COF value should not become a substitute justification for the change.

Request a matched evidence packet

Keep the current reference and candidate records together. For each, request material and lot identity, the reported friction property, the contact pair, method revision, relevant test conditions and sample age information available from the converter. Ask the technical reviewer which differences prevent comparison.
Where a matched test or process trial is needed, agree its purpose and decision owner before ordering it. Do not nominate a universal pass value from an unrelated film datasheet. This article supplies neither a target COF nor a production speed.
Record the outcome in plain terms: directly comparable evidence available, further comparison required, or candidate not approved for the stated application. Include the reason and the reference document. That produces a decision another colleague can understand without repeating the whole enquiry.

Keep film friction separate from package protection

A favourable friction comparison does not close the remaining packaging questions. Maintain separate decisions for material identity, food-contact suitability, the finished pack’s integrity and any other requirements of the particular project. Avoid an approval stamp that silently turns one reviewed property into approval of the entire package.
For an OEM noodle packaging discussion, send the exact SKU, proposed pack change and available converter reports through the contact page. Ask which information can be confirmed for the project. No machine, material or performance capability is promised by this general review workflow.
