Why Quantity per SKU Matters More Than Total Order Quantity in a Quote
Learn why suppliers need quantities by product and packaging format—not only a total order quantity—to prepare an accurate quote.

“We need one container” does not tell a noodle manufacturer what to quote. A container could hold one product and pack format or many small SKUs, each with separate materials, labels and production requirements.
A SKU is a specific commercial item
A SKU normally combines product, net weight, packaging and label version. The same noodle in two pack sizes is usually two commercial items. The same pack with two languages may also require separate artwork control.
List each item on its own line instead of grouping everything as “noodles.”
Production is planned by item
Each SKU may require material preparation, settings, packaging components, code checks and line clearance. More SKUs can mean more changeovers and approval work even when the total shipment volume is unchanged.
This is why a supplier must check MOQ and feasibility by SKU and packaging route.
Packaging makes the split more important
Printed packaging is ordered and controlled by design version. If a buyer divides a modest project among many artworks, the packaging quantity for each may become the constraint. Standard packs or a simpler label route may be more practical for a first test, subject to confirmation.
Shipment planning also needs the mix
Different SKUs can have different carton dimensions, weights and sales velocity. A mixed order should show cartons and CBM by item so buyers can evaluate loading efficiency and inventory exposure.
A useful quantity table
SKU | Product | Pack format | Cartons | Units/carton | Destination
A | | | | |
B | | | | |
Add two scenarios if necessary: a trial order and a repeat-order target. The supplier can then explain which assumptions change.
FAQ
Is total order value still important?
Yes, but it does not replace SKU-level quantities for production, packaging and loading decisions.
Can several products share one MOQ?
Policies vary. Ask the supplier to confirm MOQ for each SKU and packaging component.
What if I do not know the exact split?
Provide a proposed range and sales priorities. The supplier can comment on feasible formats, but the final quotation needs a defined mix.
