EU Noodle Nutrition Checks: Why Fibre Can Change the Energy Total
A quick protein-carbohydrate-fat calculation can omit fibre’s energy contribution. Request the calculation basis before correcting an EU noodle nutrition panel.

AI-generated editorial illustration of including separate contributions in a total; paper-strip sizes and colours do not represent nutrient amounts, energy factors or an actual noodle nutrition panel.
If an EU noodle nutrition panel’s energy value does not match a quick protein, carbohydrate and fat calculation, ask for the complete calculation before calling the panel wrong. Fibre and other applicable components have their own energy factors, and the displayed numbers may not be the full calculation inputs.
The buyer’s job is to identify the discrepancy and obtain a traceable explanation. Do not overwrite the supplier’s energy figure in artwork using an incomplete spreadsheet.
The three-factor shortcut has limits
Annex XIV of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 gives separate energy factors. Carbohydrate other than polyols and protein use 4 kcal/g; fat uses 9 kcal/g; fibre uses 2 kcal/g. Their corresponding factors are 17, 17, 37 and 8 kJ/g. The annex also lists other components, including polyols, with different factors. EU energy-conversion factors.
A spreadsheet using only carbohydrate × 4, protein × 4 and fat × 9 can therefore omit an applicable contribution. This does not prove that every unexplained difference is caused by fibre. It gives the reviewer a specific question to investigate.
Work through a deliberately simplified example
The following invented inputs describe no Noodle House product. Assume all quantities relate to the same 100 g basis, carbohydrate excludes fibre and polyols, and there are no other energy-contributing components to include in this teaching exercise.
Component | Hypothetical quantity | kcal calculation | kJ calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
Carbohydrate excluding polyols | 60 g | 60 × 4 = 240 | 60 × 17 = 1,020 |
Protein | 10 g | 10 × 4 = 40 | 10 × 17 = 170 |
Fat | 2 g | 2 × 9 = 18 | 2 × 37 = 74 |
Fibre | 6 g | 6 × 2 = 12 | 6 × 8 = 48 |
Total in this exercise | — | 310 | 1,312 |
Omitting fibre would produce 298 kcal and 1,264 kJ. The missing contribution is 12 kcal and 48 kJ. The example uses the specified factors for each unit; it is not a finished label or an instruction to substitute these invented values on a real pack.
Before repeating this arithmetic with actual data, ask the data owner what each nutrient field includes. If a source uses a different carbohydrate definition, adding fibre without reconciling that definition could introduce another error.
Request the calculation behind the panel
Send the product-data owner the exact panel revision and the buyer’s calculation. Ask for a reconciliation showing:
- the product or formulation covered and whether the values describe the food as sold or prepared;
- the quantity basis used for every input;
- the nutrient definitions, including treatment of fibre and any polyols;
- the applicable energy factors and included components;
- the input precision and how the displayed figures were rounded;
- the reviewer responsible for approving the final declaration.
These are proposed handover fields, not a demand to disclose a confidential recipe publicly. The authorized technical parties can agree what supporting information is needed.
Reconcile the discrepancy before changing artwork
Record the original declared energy, the buyer’s attempted calculation and the explanation received. If the difference comes from an omitted component, correct the internal calculation. If the source panel needs correction, request the revised approved panel rather than changing one number independently.
Keep the explanation attached to the product file so the same apparent mismatch does not trigger another inconsistent edit during a retailer upload. A spreadsheet that matches the total still does not establish that the underlying nutrient data represents the actual product.
The as-sold versus as-prepared guide helps resolve the basis before this calculation. For a private-label noodle project, send the SKU, intended market and available nutrition files through the contact page.
Confirm the data and destination presentation with the responsible label reviewer. This arithmetic check does not authorize an energy, fibre or other nutrition claim.
