Noodle Container Collection: Track Demurrage and Detention Separately

Confirm the collection and equipment-return conditions before relying on a single free-time figure in a noodle import plan.

Collecting a full noodle container from the terminal does not necessarily end all container-related time charges. Confirm the terminal collection conditions and the equipment-return conditions separately before scheduling the truck and warehouse.
A quotation that says only “free time included” leaves important questions unanswered: free time for what, measured from which event and ending when?

Distinguish the two exposures

The US Federal Maritime Commission describes detention as a charge for extended use of intermodal equipment and demurrage as accruing when a container exceeds free time on a marine terminal. FMC detention and demurrage overview.
Use that distinction to ask better questions, then obtain the actual carrier, terminal and contractual terms for the shipment. Terminology and charging arrangements can differ, including arrangements that combine periods. This article does not assign a universal number of free days or decide whether a particular invoice is lawful.

Build the collection and return timeline

For the proposed import, ask the forwarder to identify the container, destination terminal, availability information and applicable collection deadline. Separately, identify the equipment return location, accepted return procedure and deadline.
Keep the exact sources of those instructions. A provisional arrival estimate is not the same as confirmation that a container is available for collection. A warehouse delivery booking is not confirmation that the carrier has accepted the empty equipment back.
The practical plan needs an owner for each event: arranging collection, receiving and unloading, then arranging the accepted return. One provider may manage several stages, but the handoff should remain explicit.

Do not assume all days are counted alike

Ask which dates and times start and stop each period, how weekends or holidays are treated, whether any separate storage charges apply, and which tariff or agreement governs the calculation. Record the answers rather than borrowing a free-time rule from an earlier shipment on another route.
If the forwarder quotes a combined period, ask how that arrangement relates to the planned collection and return. Avoid counting the same allowance twice in two separate spreadsheets.

A hypothetical scheduling gap

Imagine a buyer has arranged timely terminal collection but books the warehouse unloading slot several days later. The plan focuses on clearing the port before a deadline, while nobody confirms whether the equipment can be returned within the relevant allowance.
The team should resolve unloading capacity, truck availability and return instructions before relying on that schedule. This does not mean a charge is inevitable; it means the plan lacks information needed to assess the exposure.
No day counts, rates or actual carrier terms are assumed in this example. Do not respond by delaying the truck or changing a booking without checking the confirmed shipment instructions.

Keep evidence when events change

Retain availability messages, booking confirmations, gate events, warehouse receipt and accepted equipment-return records. If access or return instructions change, ask the responsible carrier or forwarder to explain the effect on the applicable timeline.
A disagreement needs the actual documents and current dispute process. Do not automatically deduct a disputed charge or assume that delay alone proves either party’s liability.
Use the destination-information checklist when requesting a freight scope. The FOB and CIF comparison addresses the separate commercial allocation of transport obligations.
For product and loading information, send the SKUs, quantities and destination through the contact page. Obtain current transport deadlines and charges from the parties handling the shipment; this article does not promise an included free-time allowance.
